This quick and easy whole wheat bread has a crispy crust and a soft and fluffy interior. Fresh or toasted, the fiber content of this bread will help you stay satisfied for longer. The dough is made with only a few simple ingredients and 15 minutes of your prep time. You can even have your family roll up their sleeves to mix the dough.

While the dough rises you can meal-prep your favorite sandwich toppings for the week. Our recommendations include a tuna salad, Waldorf chicken salad, or curried chickpea salad.


Ingredients

For bread:

  • 1 envelope of active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 3/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 3 2/3 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • oil, for greasing

For topping:

  • 1 tablespoon old-fashioned oats
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Stir sugar into 1/2 cup lukewarm water, sprinkle envelope of yeast over the top and let stand for 10 minutes, until frothy.

  2. Pour the flour into a large bowl and stir in salt. Make a well in the center and pour in yeast mixture and remaining of water.

  3. Mix thoroughly into a soft dough.

  4. Brush a 9-inch loaf pan with oil. Transfer dough into prepared pan and cover with dish towel. Let rise in a warm place for 90 minutes.

  5. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Bake loaf in oven for 30-35 minutes. It should be firm and golden brown.

  6. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

  7. Slice & enjoy as your favorite sandwich!
